Pushed by the semi-conductor technology the miniaturisation of components is also advancing in the area of mechanical engineering. Besides the micro electronics, the so-called micro system technologies, further micro technologies have been developed during the last few years. The motivation for this development is the economy of energy, material and space to open up new applications.

Based on a new generation of minaturised machine elements there are, in the meantime, not only micro gears and micro motors suitable for industrial needs, but also micro encoders, micro feed systems etc. - everything necessary for the machine designer to realise single machine axes or a complete machine in miniature.

The Micromotion GmbH specialises in the development and manufacture of micro gear systems for industrial use, offering the world's smallest backlash free micro precision gear. The Micro Harmonic Drive is the basis for several product variations in many different executions, so that for nearly each application the optimal micro gear is available.

The Micro Harmonic Drive gear's principle of operation is similar to the "conventional" Harmonic Drive gear; the only difference is the wave generator is a planetary gear achieving high reduction ratios from 160:1 to 1000:1. These extremely miniaturised reduction gears are manufactured by using photolithographic production methods, the so-called LIG-process. At the moment Micromotion is the only company using this industrial process worldwide.

The Micro Harmonic Drive is suitable for various application areas, such as semi-conductor manufacturing, micro assembly, optical communication, measurement technology, micro robotics, laser technology, aerospace technology and medical devices and watch industry.
